Cosy up in this thoughtfully finished retreat for one or two people – it’s the ideal base for a romantic getaway or a walking adventure in the northern region of the impressive Lake District. Set within the grounds of Maes Tea Room on the fringes of the small village of Uldale, it offers walks from the door in the Caldbeck Fells, a quieter part of the national park. Caldbeck is 5 miles away and Keswick, where there’s a choice of shops, pubs and restaurants, is 11.5 miles. Bassenthwaite Lake, important for wildlife, is 6 miles away, and Derwentwater, where you can hire motor boats, rowing boats, canoes, kayaks and more, is 12.5 miles. In Whinlatter Forest, 11.5 miles, you can follow mountain bike trails, while a more sedate, historical treat can be experienced with a tour of the 17th-century Mirehouse and Gardens (open April to October), 7 miles.
Take the four wooden steps up to the decking of the shepherd’s hut and admire its traditional styling, with a curved, corrugated roof and dark-coloured exterior. Double stable doors open up to reveal a beautifully finished interior with lots of thoughtful details. The open-plan space encompasses a compact cooking area, with a small hob, fridge/freezer and microwave, and a bistro table for dining – and don’t forget you can pre-order an evening meal from the lovely tea room next door. Light the wood burner and relax in comfort on the sofa with a favourite show on the Smart TV. There’s also electric heating to make sure you’re always toasty. At the far end of the hut, a king-size bed offers the chance for deep sleep after a day in the fresh air. Completing this appealing interior is a compact shower room with a WC.
The decked area outside the hut offers stunning views over the fells – the perfect place to start the morning with a coffee. There’s private parking in the grounds for one car.
