Located on the outskirts of Embleton village on the Northumberland coast, sits this charming one-bedroom property. Situated in the grounds of a 5-acre estate, it’s ideal as a romantic getaway or base for a solo traveller. Enjoy tranquil walks through the private woodland and orchard or stroll through the medieval village of Embleton. Alternatively, for a walk on the beach head 1.2 miles to Embleton Bay. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the sandy beach is overlooked by the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle and backed by dunes teeming with wildlife. If you fancy practising your swing, there’s also an 18-hole golf course.

Inside offers a sense of tranquillity with elegant furnishings and Rennie Mackintosh-inspired decor adorning all the rooms. On the open-plan ground floor, a comfortable sofa and chair make the spacious lounge a cheerful and inviting spot while huge French doors offer up countryside and distant coastal views. Relax with a film on the TV or simply sit and contemplate the views. For extra comfort, there’s a wood burner to keep things warm on chillier days. From the lounge, step through to the neat kitchen where you’ll find all the modern appliances you’ll need to create delicious meals then serve at the intimate dining table with seating for two people. There’s even a window seat in the kitchen so you can sit and chat while someone else does the cooking. A convenient family bathroom is also located on this floor. From the living area, stairs lead up to the first floor where the master bedroom is located. Featuring a king-size bed, the room is light and airy with beautiful sash windows that overlook the treetops. The en-suite bathroom has a fabulous freestanding bath that is ideal for soaking in after a day exploring the coastline.

Outside, a large decked terrace is a peaceful spot for morning coffee while watching the sunrise. During the day, enjoy a good book in the sun or pick some homegrown vegetables from the estate’s garden then dine alfresco on the terrace table.

2024 is a year of Celebrations at The Lodge@Shirewater as the house is 100 years old as well as it being 15 years in April since Anne first started letting it out. Any new bookings with an arrival date in 2024 will benefit from special price reductions to celebrate.

A wonderful property. The bed is so comfortable and the welcome pack and freshly baked bread was super. Anne and Peter have gone out of their way to think of everything and to make The Lodge a special place to stay. We loved being visited by Danny their dog and picking some plums in the orchard. The birds in the trees surrounding the property and Read morethe deer in the field behind the house as well as the distant views of the sea make this a truly fabulous place to stay. The beautifully realised Lodge provided us with a most relaxing week in Northumberland. We enjoyed the generous welcome basket and freshly baked bread, with a special mention for the neighbours eggs and the coffee. The latter was so good that we detoured on the way home to call in at Pumphreys and buy some for home use. We recommend the walk to ERead morembleton Bay and also Etal and Chillingham Castles. But the Lodge makes a great centre for seeing most that Northumberland has to offer. Hide

This place is a real gem in every way. The property is in a perfect location, quiet, peaceful, close to nature (you'll probably have a close encounter with a hare during your stay - he 'mows' the grass island in front of the kitchen) and only 5 minutes' walk to the three pubs (the Dunstanburgh Castel Hotel has a great beer garden) and excellent shRead moreop (post office/farm shop/delicatessen/general store). The walk into Embleton is down a quiet road where drivers take care approaching walkers and cyclists. You can be on Embleton beach (which is lovely) after a 25-minute walk or, via Dunstan Steads, it's an easy walk to Dunstanburgh Castle (about 45 minutes). The property is immaculately clean and beautifully furnished and equipped with great inside and outside space. You also have access to the owners' wonderful gardens. This must be one of the most comfortable beds I've slept on and having two full bathrooms is a real touch of luxury. A generous welcome hamper greets you as does a freshly baked loaf in the bread-maker. There are maps, guides, books on local interest, fiction, DVDs, CDs, games etc - you couldn't be better provided for. Owners (and Danny the golden retriever) make you very welcome and are on hand if you need them. Embleton itself is well located for access to all the local points of interest. One of the best places we've stayed, and we intend to return at the first opportunity. Hide

What a special place Shirewater is. A very warm welcome from Anne and Peter. Walking into the smell of freshly baking bread in the kitchen was the perfect start. The food hamper was beautiful. Dont miss out on Tildas eggs from the hens next door. The lodge has everything you could wish for. It was immaculately clean ( and I am very fussy!). The supRead moreer king bed was incredibly comfortable and sitting in bed with a morning cuppa looking at the distant sea view was lovely. The roll top bath in the en-suite was perfect after miles of walking on the nearby beaches and coast paths. Shirewater is a little slice of heaven. The orchard was not only bursting with the juiciest plums but masses of butterflies! The heron was fishing on the lake and the grounds are simply beautiful. Expertly landscaped to make the most of the natural environment. What an absolutely wonderful time we had. We shall be back without doubt. Hide

The Lodge at Shirewater was delightful. Though the booking staff at Original Cottages were very pleasant, they appeared somewhat disorganised. I asked for twin beds when booking - this request was ignored. I subsequently telephoned to repeat the request, and was assured this had been done. My client account still showed a king double. I changed toRead more twin on the account . I was not surprised on arrival at Shirewater to discover the bed made up as a double. This does not inspire confidence. Hide
