  • A romantic escape for two in a former writer's cabin
  • Hidden away in a pretty woodland, overlooking a little stream
  • Fabulous walking trails in every direction
Property code: 43059

Originally a writer’s cabin, this cosy shack feels off the beaten track, yet is really very easy to get back to the real world. Many items made by the owner from a native ash tree can be found within the structure of the property giving it a truly unique feel. From here, you can explore the private woodland, listen to the birds, relax in the hammock by the stream or enjoy stunning trails from the doorstep. Across the lane, walk the Sugar Loaf Mountain or stride out into the Brecon Beacons National Park (5 miles) or the Wye Valley, just over 20 miles away. There are exceptional road trails and mountain biking within the area and The Black Mountains are home to pony trekking centres. Walk to the local pub a mile away for supper. The foodie town of Abergavenny, known as the Gateway to Wales is 3.5 miles away where you could visit the Norman castle, browse some shops or make use of one of the many cafes and restaurants whether your choice is a Michelin starred meal or cosy café. The town of Crickhowell is within 7 miles and also good for stocking up on local fayre. Llanthony Prioy is 8 miles away and well worth a visit. The historical city of Hereford with Cathedral and Mappa Mundi and Hay on Wye, famous for the annual Hay Festival and numerous second hand bookshops, are both good for day trips.

Inside, the property is a charming and cosy space with a sweet open-plan living space, complete with cosy wood burner for snuggling up on chillier evenings as well as a selection of books and games to keep you entertained. There is also a small kitchen area for preparing simple meals. Through the curtain, you'll find the snug sleeping space with its double bed. A shower room with compost WC completes the accommodation.

But it's the outside of the property that really makes this a beautiful place to stay. Surrounded by tranquil woodland and nestled at the foot of Sugar Loaf Mountain, this is the most blissful of retreats where you can relax on the decked area and enjoy a meal on the table and chairs, have an afternoon nap in the hammock and light the fire bowl on cool evenings as you watch stars appear in the night sky.

The Wood shack is a place you will not find often. It is remote, but without being completely cut off from the world. The shack is tiny, cosy and has all the equipment one needs.

A very cosy shack for wildlife lovers. The dawn and dusk chorus were super, I have never heard such sound since the 1980s. Lovely walks on the local hills.

This cabin is perfect if you want to get away and go off grid. My partner and I had a wonderful time here, and the hosts answered the phone straight away when we could not find the keys to the property. Would highly recommend!

A peaceful and secluded retreat, well equipped with just what you need. The log burner worked amazingly well making evenings really cosy and the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in away from home! A perfect location for bird watching and walking - a superb digital detox.

The perfect stay for a few days of digital detox. The shack has everything you need plus some really nice touches (e.g. hot water bottles and a hammock!). Nice walk to the pub as well. A wonderful "off grid" weekend away. The cabin had EVERYTHING you need and more. The owners thought of it all. They even mapped out some walks in the welcome book. The cabin is beautifully quirky, warm and cosy. We loved using the firepit on the first night, cooking steak from the local butchers. Had a wonderful stay in the Wood Shack. Cosy and comfortable, we lit the woodburner, and tried to name all the birds we could see from the windows! One day we went up to Hay-on-Wye and visited the Castle; and the next we had a lovely walk up to Sugar Loaf, then a pint in the pub on the way back. Very relaxing, and would love to go back sometime.

Lovely place to stay. It kept us nice and warm and it was lovely waking up and watching the birdies fluttering about eating their breakfast. Fantastic location and very quaint cabin. No complaints at all. Would definitely visit again. Also worth mentioning the Crown, the pub nearby. Such a friendly environment and wonderful dishes.
